Little Feat - Little Feat (1971) / Dixie Chicken (1973)

Extraña y, para mí, fea edición del primer y tercer discos de Little Feat. Esta vez, una edición alemana, no española, como cabría pensar.
¡Cómo iba a ser española! Por entonces Little Feat eran totalmente desconocidos por estos lares. De hecho, salvo en EEUU, y pese a estar encajados en el sonido "costa Oeste californiano" siempre fueron, como leí una vez, el patito feo de aquella movida.
Aún hoy, no hay mucha gente que los conozca pese a que fueron un grupazo. Bueno, mientras Lowell George estuvo con ellos. Fue morir él (1979) y, pese a que eran músicos técnicamente impecables, perdieron mucha personalidad o como se quiera llamar.
«Fueron una banda salvajemente ecléctica, mezclando blues, R&B, country y rock'n'roll». Y las letras, con toques surrealistas, o sea, raritas los llevó definitivamente al cajón de los grupos de culto: excelentes críticas pero poco reconocimiento masivo.

La banda fue creada por Lowell George (voz, guitarra y slide guitar) y Roy Estrada (bajo), que eran veteranos de los Mothers of invention de Frank Zappa. ¡Casi nada!

En fin, que si no los conoces y dicho tipo de música te interesa, ¡no te los pierdas! Placer asegurado.
A día de hoy, se encuentran sus discos en forma de box-set a precios de derribo.

La reflexión de la semana, de parte de la gente de la Downtown Music Guide

Parece que ante la insensatez rampante que parece haberse apoderado del mundo hay gente, de hecho como siempre, unos pocos, que son capaces de mantener una actitud crítica, activa y POSITIVA.
Los admiro porque yo soy incapaz de ver luz en el asunto y eso me paraliza y me hace cada vez más misántropo.

El caso es que parece que la gente de la Downtown Music Gallery (ya he hablado de ellos: ¡gran tienda de música neoyorquina!) se ha propuesto hacernos reflexionar sobre nuestro mundo a través de letras de canciones y un comentario adicional. Y (¿será porque me caen muy bien?) logran que vea  semi-iluminados asuntos muy espinosos. Gracias. Muchas gracias.

It seems hard to believe that this song & album, ‘Monster’ was released 50 years ago next month!?! Most folks just remember Steppenwolf from their big hit & biker anthem, “Born to Be Wild”, but they had much more going on than that. Their records were consistently strong and their lyrics were well thought out, well worth considering. The above song does a good job of capturing the darker side of American history, much of it still rings true today. Who is the MONSTER that they are warning us about?!?! Material - Secret Life (1979-1981)

«Material  es un conglomerado musical  capitaneado por el productor y bajista Bill Laswell cuyo origen se remonta a finales de los 70 en Nueva York. Fueron pioneros en llevar a cabo una fusión de jazz, funk y punk, incorporando elementos de hip-hop y world music.» Por entonces el mundo musical anglosajón aún no había experimentado a nivel “masivo” el placer del descubrimiento de otras músicas que serían etiquetadas cómo “World music”. El movimiento en que encuadran a los primeros Material es la "anti-musical no wave scene". ¡Toma ya! Sea como sea, están muy pero que muy bien.

La primera formación (1979) dio soporte a la visita de Gong (Daevid Allen; sonido Canterbury) a Nueva York para participar en la escena que estaba en efervescencia por entonces con la sala CBGB cómo epicentro. De aquella visita salió un disco: “About time” que Daevid Allen firmó cómo perteneciente a la banda “New York Gong”.

Luego, Material publicó sus primeras grabaciones en forma de singles y EPs. Y es un lío que no he conseguido desentrañar porque hay varias portadas y títulos diferentes.

Parece que compartían el título “Temporary music”, ¿verdad?. Pues no. De la época, tengo en vinilo estas grabaciones:
El caso es que ayer me dio por indagar qué se encuentra en formato digital en los servicios de streaming musical y… ¡Bien! Parece que un álbum titulado “Secret life” e una recopilación que contiene los primeros singles y EPs que grabaron entre 1979 y 1981.

Y, por si te lo estás preguntando, sí, hay varias portadas ;-).
